Through the Alpujarra

This is our first expedition into Andalucia, and on our way to Granada we decided to head through the Alpujarra.

The drive itself was amazing. We split the journey into two days so that we could stay over a night on the way. We passed through towns like Pampaneira and Trevelez which were pretty special.

Unfortunately we ended up missing the town of Yegen, where Gerald Brenan lived for many years from the 1920′s. I’ve been reading his fascinating book, ‘South From Granada‘ (many thanks to Tim Aldiss for this gift!), which recounts his experience of life there almost a century ago.

We’d spotted a recommendation in the ‘Lonely Planet Andalucia ‘ guide for the Alqueria de Moraymar Hotel near Cadiar.

I have to say that the hotel was fantastic, set in beautiful grounds, with fantastic little rooms, and a lovely restaurant, complete with roaring fire. The food was fab too.

As with the rest of Andalucia, we seemed to get cheaper room rates as we were out of season. That said, it was nice to be there with just a few others.

The empresario, Mariano, runs a farm, a bodega, sells honey, and sources loads of the food locally. A thorough recommendation!
