Cordoba, Home of the Mezquita

I had only really wanted to visit Cordoba for one reason, which was to visit the Mezquita, which I had seen in the BBC documentary presented by Bettany Hughes, ‘When the Moors Ruled in Europe’.

I was delighted to discover that the documentary is available to watch online on Google Videos here (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-768956312207897325).

Anyway, suffice to say that the Mezquita lived up to expectation.

Travel tip: Less happens on a Monday! We really wanted to visit the Medina Azahara, which we drove to without checking opening times before we left. It is closed Monday’s; plus none of the walking tours ran on a Monday.

Another Travel tip: Entrance to the Mezquita is free if you enter between 08.30 and 10.30 am, Monday to Friday; and 8 Euros thereafter. I tried the Audio guide but it was a bit pants.

Unfortunately we didn’t have a chance to visit the Azahara as our itinerary was a tad poorly planned. Another visit is required to be sure!

Cordoba itself was great. We found plenty of places to eat. Hotel Mezquita, where we stayed, was brilliant. We had a view of the Mezquita from our bedroom (room 5), the staff were nice, and it was a very reasonable 45 Euros per night (double).

One detail which Mrs K spotted was this rather macabre looking tomb stone in the Mezquite… quite a Rock’n'Roll way to spend eternity:
